ELMER GRIFFITH Mrs. Lee Beckner has received word that her nephew, Gene Nor moyle, is ill at Shepard's Field, Wichita Falls, Texas. Earl McCabe and Harold Buchan an, who recently enlisted in the navy, have returned to lone to wait their call, since enlistments in the navy have overtaxed accommoda tions for the present. Nineteen members and many vis itors attended the church dinner and annual church meeting Sunday. Rev. J. Fred Stillwell spoke on "Goals and Objectives." The following re ports were made: Ladies Aid, Mrs. J. E. Swanson; Sunday school, Mrs. Minnie Forbes; church, Mrs. Dale Ray; church repairs, Rev. Stillwell. Sunday school officers were nomin ated and will be voted on at a later meeting. They are, superintendent Rev. Stillwell; assistant superintend ent, Mrs. J. A. Troedson; primary teachers, Mrs. W. G. Roberts, Mrs. E. M. Baker and Mrs. Franklin Ely; junior girls class, Mrs. Erling Thompson; junior boys class, Mrs. H. V. Smouse; secretary, Charlotte Sperry; treasurer, Mrs. Minnie For bes; librarian, Shirley Smouse; pi anist, Mrs. Erling Thompson; church organist, Mrs. E. M. Baker. A board of managers was elected, consisting of Fred Pettyjohn and Mrs. Marion Palmer for the Baptist; E. M. Baker and Erling Thompson for the Con gregational; Mrs. Frank Engelman and Mrs. Dale Ray for the Chris tian, and Mrs. J. E. Swanson, mis cellaneous. Elders are Fred Petty john and Erling Thompson; deacons, E. M. Baker and Marion Palmer; deaconesses, Mrs. Laxton McMur ray, Mrs. Frank Engelman, Mrs Delia M. Corson, and Mrs. Erling Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn and little son of Hermiston spent Wed nesday evening with Mrs. Petty john's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Lundell. Mrs. Carl Allyn returned home Sunday from Heppner. Her arm, which was painfully injured in the car door when their car dropped in to flooded Butter creek, is improv ing, but still quite sore. Mr. and Mrs. Errett Hummel made a-week-end" trip to Portland. They were accompanied by Miss Gene vieve Piluso and Reuben Fischer who visited their homes in Port land. Norman Bergstrom who is a stu dent at Pacific university spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergstrom. According ' to a Portland paper, Mrs. Rose Ritchie, a former resi dent of lone, died at her home near Vancouver, Wash., on January 26. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Jean Pioton, and two grand children. Roy Lindstrom is visiting friends in Salem and Monmouth. He was accompanied to Salem by Miss Glor ia Stender, who had been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen. Mrs. James Lindsay returned Wednesday after spending a month in Portland. Mrs. Wallace Matthews of Morgan is at the home of her sister, Mrs. Berl Akers in Goo.se berry, caring for Berl, Jr., while his mother is in the hospdtaL Mrs. Frank Lindsay, who is a pa tient in the hospital at Heppner, is reported to be not so well. limbing is in progress at the Krebs Brothers ranch at Cecil. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Burk are Mrs. Burk's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burgess of Redmond. Mrs. Dorr Mason is in Portland, spending a few days with her hus band who is employed there. Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Baker enjoyed a visit from Mr. Baker's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kedrick Baker of Kahlotus, Wash., Saturday and Sunday. Glen Ball of Yakima, Wash., was a visitor here Monday. While here the federal tax sticker was stolen from the windshield of his car. Leslie Roundy drove up from Portland to spend Sunday with his wife and baby. Mrs. Huston Bryson accompanied him. Mesdames Erling Thompson, Gar land Swanson, J. E. LEXINGTON NEWS Lexington Students Aid War Effort By MARGARET SCOTT The local students were busy this week gathering old papers and mag azines for defense and getting books for the soldiers to read. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Palmer are spending a few days at the Archie Munkers home. First Aid classes are being held in the local schoolhouse each Mon day and Wednesday evening with Friday evening High prizes were won by Mrs. Hugh Smith and-Victor Rietmann, low by Mrs. Harry Yarnell and Charles Carlson, and jack high by Mrs. Charles Carlson nnd Charles Carlson. Others pre sent were Harry Yarnell, Mrs. M. E. Cotter, Miss Piluso, Mr. and Mrs. Erret Hummel, Mrs. C. W. Swanson, Mrs. Frank Lundell, Carltcn Swan son, Mrs. Ella Davidson, Mrs. E. R. Lundell, Mrs. Cleo Drake, Hugh Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Blake, Mrs. Dorr Mason, Mrs. Bert Mason, Mrs. Victor Rietmann, Mr. and Mrs. Clel Rae, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bergevin, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Denney. Defense stamps were given as prizes and the patriotic motif was used in' honor of the President's birthday. The first February meeting of the club will be at the home of Mrs. Ted Blake. Lee Pettyjohn who recently en listed in the Marines is now located at San Diego, according to word re ceived by his sister, Mrs. Marion Palmer. Mrs. Lucy E. Rodgers of Heppner was in lone Tuesday afternoon to hold a meeting of the committee for the mobilization of Morrow county women for defense. There will be a regular meeting of the Willows grange Saturday eve ning and a Valentine dance on Feb ruary 14. Miss Joan Sipes, senior at Univer sity of Idaho at Moscow, is the guest at the home of her uncle, Henry V. Smouse. She has been in Pendleton, visiting her brother, Ser geant Marquis Greenwault, radio technician with a bombng crew, lo cated temporarily at Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Smouse and Shirley vis ited the young people in Pendleton this week end. Both are former res idents of lone, and attended school here. Harold Buhman of Heppner as in structor. Forty-two persons are registered and much 'interest is be ing shown in the work. Word has been received of the marriage of Grant Henderson of Stanfield and Grace Bensel of Her miston. , They are making their home in Portland where Mr. Henderson is employed. They were visiting in Hermiston Sunday, and were met by Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Henderson and sons of this city. Donnie Hiatt is ill at the George Allyn home. The members of the co-op organ ization had an all-day meeting in the grange hall Sunday. Dinner was served at noon by the H. E. C. mem bers. Officers were elected for the coming year. Many local people attended the President's ball in Heppner Satur day night. Archie Padberg is receiving med ical attention in Portland. Lexington H. E. C. will meet next Thursday, the 12th, at 1:30 p. m. at the country home of Mrs. Chris Brown with Mrs. H. 0. Bauman as sisting hostess. All members are urg ed to attend as there is Red Cross sewing to do. ROARDMAN NEWS Bridal Shower Given Mrs. Frank Lentz By SiRS. CLAUD COATS Mr. and Mrs. Art Gillespie, daugh ters Elva May and Billy of Stan field spent the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Z. J. Gillespie. The dance at the grange hall Sat urday evening was well patronized and all report a fine time. A bridal shower for Mrs. Fred Lentz (Lena Belle Forbes) was held at Mrs. Forbes' Friday, with Mrs. Esther Knight, hostess. Little Carma Barlow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Barlow, celebrated her fifth birthday on the afternoon of January 30 with a party at the home of Mrs. Florence Root. About 35 little tots and mothers were pre sent. Mrs. Chas. Wicklander went to Hermiston Friday to bring her twin brother home rom the hospital, where he had been confined the last two weeks with a bad heart. Bud Chaffee took them. LEATHERS Since all weather reports have been tabooed, Mr. Groundhog couldn't show his nose Feb. 2. So who is there to say we shall have six weeks more winter? The sun shone beautifully between showers. There was a meeting of the Red Cross sewing group here Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ethel Knighten was elected chairman. Those present who took sewing to their homes were Opal Adams, Ethel Knighten, Maud Robison, Alice Hastings, Mary McDonald, Debzbie McDaniel, Ethel Robison, Elsa M. Leathers, Char lotte Rogers. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Farrens mov ed their sheep from their Burton Valley home to Rhea creek Satur day, with Ball and Mahoney. Mrs. Farrens will cook through lambing and Raymond McDonald will work there and went with the Fan-ens'. Kinard McDaniel went to Lone Rock Saturday and moved his wife here Sunday to the Catherine Mc Intyre ranch where he is employed. Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Wyland of Rhea creek visited Sunday at the Austin Devin home. All te&chers of both high and grade schools went to Irrigon to the teachers' meeting last week. Delvin McDaniel has been quite ill at his home with the flu. Mrs. Ella Bleakman who has been ill the past month is able to be up and around the house part of the day, but is unable to care for her store. Bob Rogers visited in town Sun day from Kinzua. Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDaniel purchased the Raymond McDonald property, known as the Bates place, this week and moved there. Mrs. McDonald will live in the property ' vacated by the McDaniels until school is out. Mrs. Iris Brannon was appointed by the hgih school board for clerk to fill the unexpired term of Francis Leathers, resigned. Gus Steers is ill with flu at his home here. Miss Maxine McDaniel and Joe Mahon took Mrs. Maud Robison to Heppner Saturday where she at tended to some business. Monte McDonald was 7 years old on Thursday this week. He took his birthday cake and jello to school and entertained his room. Mrs. Carey Hastings, Mrs. Cleo Robison and Arthie Bechdolt will entertain the Rebekahs Tuesday eve ning at the supper hall. Mrs. Walter Wright was appoint ed for the district to register all women 18 to 60 years of age. She will begin the work soon after the 16th of , February when applications are available.
